GA4 Key Events Not Showing? Here Are the Reasons and Solutions

You went into GA4, marked an event as a key event (what used to be called a conversion), waited a day — or a few days — and the Key Events report still shows zero. Or the numbers don’t match what you’re seeing in the Events report. Something feels broken.

I’ve been there. The thing is, a key event isn’t a separate piece of data — it’s just a flag on top of an existing event. So when your key events report shows nothing, there are really only two possibilities:

  1. The event itself isn’t being collected. No event data = no key event data.
  2. The event is collected, but the key events report doesn’t show it. The data exists — something about the key event configuration or reporting is hiding it.

Let me walk through both categories. If you’re not sure where to start, go with Category 1 first, then Category 2.

Category 1: The Event Itself Isn’t Being Collected

Before you troubleshoot anything key-event-specific, confirm that the underlying event is actually reaching GA4. Here are the most common reasons the event itself might not be recorded.

Category 2: Event Is Collected But Key Events Report Doesn’t Show It

If you’ve confirmed the event is reaching GA4 (it appears in the Events report or Realtime), but the Key Events report still shows zero or inconsistent numbers — the problem is on the key event side. Here’s why.

Key Events Not Marked Correctly

This is the most common reason in this category. An event will not appear in the Key Events report unless you explicitly mark it as a key event. GA4 doesn’t do this automatically for custom events.

Go to Admin → Key Events and check: is your event listed? Is the toggle on? If the toggle is off, or the event isn’t there at all, that’s the problem — and the fix is simple.

What to do: Click New key event, enter the exact event name (case-sensitive), and save. Data from that point forward will start appearing. Also keep in mind that past data won’t retroactively show as key events — only events from after you saved the setting.

Data Thresholds

Even when the raw event data exists, data thresholds can hide it in the Key Events report. If your traffic volume is low, GA4 may apply thresholds specifically to key events data. This is especially noticeable for low-frequency key events — the event happened, but the report says zero.

What to do: Go to Admin → Reporting Identity and switch to Device-based. This reduces the likelihood of thresholds being applied to key events data.

Lookback Window and Attribution Settings

GA4 key events use a conversion lookback window (default is 30 days for user-acquisition and session-source models). If a user triggered your key event today but their first session was 35 days ago, with some attribution models, that key event might not be attributed to that acquisition channel — and it won’t show up where you expect it.

Also, keep in mind that the Key Events report uses attribution modeling, while the Events report counts raw occurrences. They will naturally show different numbers.

What to do: Check your attribution settings in Admin → Attribution Settings. Adjust the lookback window if needed. If you just need a raw count of how many times the event happened, use the Events report instead.

Incorrect Date Range

Key events have a nuance regular events don’t: if you marked an event as a key event yesterday, data from before yesterday won’t show in the Key Events report — because at that time, it wasn’t a key event yet. If your date range includes last week but not today, you’ll see zero.

What to do: Make sure your date range includes dates after you marked the event as a key event. If you’re unsure, use the widest range possible and narrow down.

Looking at the Wrong Report or Property

If you manage multiple GA4 properties, this one is easy. The key event was set up in Property A, but you’re checking Property B. Or you’re looking at the Events report (raw event data) expecting to see key event counts.

What to do: Confirm you’re in the correct GA4 property, then navigate to Reports → Engagement → Conversions (or Key Events, depending on your GA4 interface version) specifically. Don’t look for key events in the Events report — they won’t show there.

Final Words

Key events in GA4 are simple in concept but surprisingly easy to troubleshoot wrong. The two-category framework helps: first confirm the event itself is collected (Category 1), then look for key-event-specific issues (Category 2). Most of the time, the root cause falls into one of these 10 reasons.
