You’re trying to modify your Google Tag — maybe you need to adjust a conversion tracking setting, update a configuration, or add a new feature. But when you go to make the change, everything is grayed out. Read-only. You can look, but you can’t touch.
If that sounds familiar, don’t worry. Your tag isn’t broken, and you haven’t lost your access. The issue is simpler than you think.
Why Is My Google Tag Read-Only?
Google Tag has its own separate authorization module.
It’s separate from your GA4 property permissions, your Google Ads account access, or your GTM container permissions.
If someone gave you access to the GA4 property but forgot to add you as a user of the Google Tag itself, you’ll only get read-only access.
It’s an easy thing to miss, and honestly, it happens more often than you’d think.
How to Fix It
Fixing this takes about 30 seconds. Here’s what to do:
Step 1: Go to your GA4 property and navigate to the 「Admin」 section.
Step 2: In the 「Data Collection and Modification」 column, click 「Data Streams」, then select the web stream that has the Google Tag you need to modify.
Step 3: In the Web stream details, click 「Configure tag settings」 (the gear icon).
Step 4: Click 「Admin」 in the Google Tag section.
Step 5: You’ll see a list of 「Google tag users」. This is where permissions are managed. From here, you can add new users, change existing roles, or request the right access level from your admin.
That’s it. Once you’re added as a user with the appropriate permissions, your Google Tag will no longer be read-only.
